Learn To Have Resilience, Perseverance And Balance with Joey Vieira

I recently had the opportunity to exclusively interview Joey VIEIRA to learn five random facts about himself and what inspired him to be a part of some of his latest projects: Love In Bloom and Escape from Spiderhead. Check out my interview with Joey below:

Loryn: What is a goal you hope to accomplish this year?

Joey: I’ve worked with so many talented actors but have yet to work with the wonderful Tom Hanks. On and off-screen he represents what I think all actors should be, kind, hardworking, professional and generous. Mad respect for him. My goal this year (and every year) is to work with Tom Hanks. That would be a dream job. Outside of that, I’m just enjoying working on some really different characters across film and television and looking forward to continuing to transform my skills into those roles.

Loryn: What inspired you to be a part of some of your latest projects: Love In Bloom and Escape from Spiderhead?

Joey: Sometimes you get a full script before auditioning and other times you’re lucky to get a page. Love in Bloom was a full script and when I was younger I trained in ballet and danced ballroom and dancing has remained a passion. So playing Enrique, the dance instructor, was a role I was born to play and it was a fun role! The director Rogue Rubin is really an actor's director and provided a safe place to really dig into the character and try new things.

Escape from Spiderhead was a different story, but that’s what I liked about it. The unknown made it more interesting. Collecting information and building the character with the team, was invigorating and the director Joseph Kosinski is a legend who is so understated and humble in his approach and I really felt we were all in the hands of a master filmmaker. He made the set a place we all wanted to be to make the best story and that was inspiring.

Loryn: What is acting process for you, how do you feel minutes prior to start being someone else on camera?

Joey: The process of creating a character starts way before I actually get the role, so by the time I get to set I am the character, and it’s not a feeling or a thought…it’s just being. I pull from everything and everyone and experiences, personal experiences to get it just right. There is always some anxiety as its a lot of new people on every set and directors all come with different approaches so as much as I come prepared, there is always the sense that what I bring is just the start, and as we do read-throughs and the set comes to life, the final jigsaw pieces really come together.

Loryn: What lesson has the entertainment industry taught you?

Joey: The Film and TV industry is challenging with more people wanting to be part of it than there is work. Some of it is a skillset, some are lucky, some of it is a great agent and relationships, but there is no secret to success. Starting out and even once you’re established in many ways, it’s a constant hustle so you have to enjoy the journey and expect the unexpected. In the early days of chasing my passion I have been homeless and jobless but never thought about doing anything else as my career although I have learned the importance of being surrounded by people outside the industry, and having other interests to have balance. So I guess you can say that it taught me resilience, perseverance, and balance.

Loryn: What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

Joey: I was shot when I was seven by a friend with a gun! Don’t play with guns kids!
