I recently had the opportunity to exclusively interview Matt Stewart to learn five random facts about himself and the story behind his song “Small Town Story ". Check out my interview with Matt below:
Loryn: What advice do you have for emerging musicians?
Matt: My advice for emerging musicians would be to just go for it. Whatever that looks like to you, follow your gut and take a chance. In my experience, being willing to put myself out there, and not be afraid to fail has really helped me grow as both a human and an artist. Hell, I just now feel like I’m coming into my own on both those fronts.
Loryn: What is the story behind your single Small Town Story?
Matt: Small Town Story is a very true to life song. It was inspired by my hometown of Lebanon, Missouri. When I was younger I’d find myself often wanting to leave the small-town life behind to chase big dreams out west somewhere, but as I got older I started growing an appreciation for the small town that helped shape me into the person I am today.
Loryn: Who is a musician you'd like to work with in the future?
Matt: This is such a tough question. There are so many musicians I’d love to work with in the future. A short list would have to include Eric Church, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Taylor Swift, and Bruce Springsteen. Ooh and The Maine. Love that band. So here’s to manifesting all of that, haha.
Loryn: What lesson has the entertainment industry taught you?
Matt: One of the most important lessons the industry has taught me has to be to stay true to yourself. It sounds cliché, but embracing your differences is what really allows your voice to stand out.
Loryn: What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Matt: I think a fun fact about me that people would be surprised to know is growing up I really wanted to be a professional wrestler. So who knows, maybe in another life I would’ve been the second coming of The Rock, haha. “Can you smelllllll what Matt is cooking?” The wrestling fans out there will get it haha.
