I had the opportunity to exclusively interview Lexi P about five random facts about herself. Plus learn what advice she has for young ladies interested in starting their own business. Check out my interview with Lexi P below:
Loryn: What have you've learned about yourself during this pandemic?
Lexi: I learned how much I really enjoy being home and being around my family. My grandma moved in with us right before COVID because she has stage 4 colon cancer and my parents are helping take care of her. I really cherish the time I got to spend with my grandma during the pandemic. When she has good days we bake together and she also gives me great ideas for my business. I love being with my family during these times. They really mean the world to me and I just want to make them proud.
Loryn: What advice do you have for young ladies who want to start their own business?
Lexi: I would tell other young ladies to just do it! Chase that dream, work hard and to not get discouraged. They should write their business idea out and present it to their parents or look for adults in their life who may support them. Sometimes parents are afraid that if we jump out there and pursue something it may distract us from school and other responsibilities, but if you are really passionate about a business you should still pursue it. Sometimes you have to show people that you can balance it all so I would say don't give up on your dreams. Its always good to talk to somebody who can help guide you maybe a parent, teacher, auntie, grandma and see how they can support you because you will need some guidance and support from an adult. Also look into your local Chamber of Commerce they have mentors available who can help guide you through business programs and also YouTube, you can learn everything online too through YouTube I know I use that as a great resource but my main thing is just don't give up. Even if you don't have that encouragement from others, don't give up and take steps every day to pursue your goals and your business even if you're just writing down a plan of action. Be consistent and just start putting yourself out there there's so many things you can do at home to start your brand. If you're interested in making jewelry you could go to the local craft store get materials and start posting them on tick tock and then you can show your parents hey I was able to generate these sales just from social media and that may actually get their attention and support but just go for it.
Loryn: What challenges have you've faced since creating Curlanistas?
Lexi: It has not been a smooth road at all. I have faced many challenges and struggles. On the outside, everything looks so easy and fun. I get to travel and live out my dream, but its not always easy; it takes a lot of hard work and prayer. I’ve faced rejection and even had issues with my manufacturer going out of business. When my manufacturer went out of business, I lost money because we were in the middle of production and I could not get in contact with their office. I had to fly to their headquarters and it was a nightmare. I had to start over and figure out quickly. The key is you cannot give up and must keep ongoing. You have to take some losses and make them into lessons. The biggest challenge honestly right now for me is balancing everything, like school, friends, social and business events and running my business. Google Calendar has been a huge help and I think I’m actually starting to feel good about everything. I’m a Virgo and we need structure, Google calendar is my best friend right now. I’m so thankful for everything and I’ll take the challenges I have any day. I’m living my dream and it’s just amazing!
Loryn: What brand would you love to work with in the future?
Lexi: I would love to work with Ivy Park. I’m a huge fan of Beyonce and am a Virgo. I would love to collab with her and create some cool hats for us girls with natural hair. I just love the business savviness and marketing mind of Beyonce and her team. This would truly be a dream come true.
Loryn: What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
Lexi: People are often surprised to learn how much I love math. I actually have awards in math when I was in middle school I earned two major awards in math and was recognized in front of my school. Math is my favorite subject and just love solving problems. I look at math like a puzzle it makes you think and put all the pieces together.
