I recently had the opportunity to exclusively interview Deepa Deo about five random facts about herself, who she would love to be mentor by Plus what she has learned about herself during this global pandemic. Check out my interview with Deepa below:
Loryn: What are your goals for this month?
Deepa: I truly believe in a quote by "Og Mandino" - The victory of success is half won when one Gains the Habit of setting and achieving "GOALS". So my Goals are essentially on a daily basis. I set up 3 goals for myself every night for the next day. They could be just simple tasks, or accomplishing daily errands or plainly getting up every morning and exercising. Repetitive goals help in forming habits and habits over a period of time become a LIFESTYLE. But if you insist, GOALS for this month would include finishing at least a good 50-60 pages for my upcoming book, gaining some potential information about the Health, Nutrition and Wellness Industry.
Loryn: If you could choose to be mentor by anyone, who would it be?
Deepa: Mr. Michael Pollan ( American author and journalist) and Dr. Vandana Shiva ( Indian scholar, environmental activist, food sovereignty advocate, and anti-globalization author). They have mentored me in a true sense. Haven't met them personally though. But the thoughts that they have managed to articulate with regards to the Food and the entire political, cultural and socio-economic system that revolves around it have had a huge role to play in reinforcing my understanding of Health and Wellness.
Loryn: What have you've learned about yourself during this pandemic?
Deepa: 1. that I cannot sit idle. I constantly need to be doing something, and something certainly meaningful at that.
2. That we can live with just a pair of clothes and a roof on our head.
3. That we need to be eternally grateful and filled with gratitude for the FOOD that lands on our plates every single day.
Loryn: What advice would you give individuals trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
Deepa: Unfortunately today, health has been reduced to weight loss, skinny looks,a certain hypothetical number on the weighing scale. Firstly, everyone who wants to get healthy and fit should know that we are all a work in progress towards fitness and being healthy. It is not a miracle that can happen overnight. We must constantly and consistently be working to achieve the fitness goals and the healthy lifestyle. Secondly, tracking numbers is good for profits and not people. We are all worthy to feel fit and healthy at any size and weight. So here goes my top 3 for all fitness freaks and everyone who is seeking a healthy lifestyle: A: Eat Food according to your culture and heritage. It goes a long way in achieving economic stability and ecological sustainability. B: make exercise a non-negotiable part of your life. It will help relax the brain and calm your mind. C: Sleep at a fixed time and wake up at a fixed time on most of the days. Truly an underrated but a vital component of good health.
Loryn: What would people be surprised to know about you?
Deepa: One thing that no one knows is as a child I always dreamt of being an Astronaut. The Cosmos really fascinates me. In the larger spec of things, we are just so tiny and inconsequential and we really do not matter. But it's really nice that way.
