Learn How To Break Free with Michaela Watson

I recently had the opportunity to exclusively interview Michaela Watson to learn five random facts about herself and the story behind her song Breaking Free. Check out my interview with Michaela below:

Loryn: Who is a musician you'd love to collaborate with in the future?

Michaela: I would love to collaborate with Allen stone or The Black Pumas. They both have vibes that I really connect to and it would a dream to work with both of them really!

Loryn: What is the story behind your song Breaking Free?

Michaela: When Breaking Free was written I was in high school. It was such a tough time because I had been dealing with so much coming at me on every side. I was dealing w/ hate from people that I thought I could trust. I had never so outwardly been discriminated against in a place that I was meant to be safe in and it had become too much. I remember being in the songwriting session just so angry and tired and fed up. And that’s where breaking free came in. It’s about not taking just anything. About being your true self and not caring about what anyone thinks! Telling society that your not gonna bend to its rules and you shouldn’t have to!

Loryn: How has the pandemic changed you?

Michaela: Before I say what I’m about to say I think it is important to acknowledge my privilege of having a place to stay and a stable source of food and income. But the pandemic really changed me for the better in many different ways. It allowed me the time to really explore myself and my values and how I feel about life. It made me a better writer, a better person, a better friend, a better family member. I’m saddened by the loss that we have all experienced but grateful for the change I’ve gone through.

Loryn: What lesson has the music industry taught you?

Michaela: To be grateful of the people around you. I have the pleasure of having a fantastic team of people around me that care about me and my success and for that, I will be forever grateful. It also taught me that if you have something good, people will notice. Don’t sell out or try to be something you think the people will like, be yourself.

Loryn: What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

Michaela: One thing that people seem to be shocked about when I tell them is that I’m a writer on all of my songs. I always want to have a piece of me on every song I sing otherwise it just doesn’t feel like me.
