I recently had the opportunity to exclusively interview DBMK to learn five random facts about them and the story behind their song “Chains”. Check out my interview with DBMK below:
Loryn: How would y'all describe your music in one sentence?
DBMK: Kyle: “Underdog anthems for a new generation.” That’s our motto for this year.
Loryn: What other projects do y'all have in store for 2022?
DBMK: Colton: We’re getting ready to dump a ton of music on you. That’s really the main thing, obviously. With it will come our ways of making it more than just the songs. We’re spending a lot of time in rehearsals right now getting ready for new live shows and festivals this year. It’s gonna be a big year for us, I can feel it.
Loryn: What is the story behind your latest single “Chains"?
DBMK: Kyle: The story of “Chains” is pretty simple really. It was July of 2020 and it felt so much like the world was ending— in many ways it still does. I was sitting alone in my house after weeks and weeks of writer's block and feeling utterly powerless to do anything meaningful, least of all make art which at the time also felt pointless, when suddenly the idea for the chorus fell out of my mouth as I was getting dressed that day. I went inward and into myself with confidence for the first time in forever and felt like I accidentally wrote “Chains.” I didn’t put my guitar down until it was done. It felt potent and rare. I felt new again.
Loryn: What musician or group would you love to collaborate with in the future?
DBMK: Colton: Oh, that’s easy! Either Denzel Curry or Olivia Rodrigo... but we challenge both of them to a chili cook-off. Our surprise judges (me and Kyle) pick a winner and they receive a DBMK feature for tastiest chili. And at the end of the day, we all get to eat chili together so everyone wins.
Loryn: What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
DBMK: Kyle: I think people would be surprised to learn just how little we know about what we’re doing. Wait, scratch that. Just say that we both grew up playing sports and being jazz band kids and Kyle sang opera and now we're in a rock band. Yeah, that feels better!
