I recently had the opportunity to exclusively interview Devyn Zillmer about five random facts about himself, who what has been his biggest accomplishment to date. Plus what he is currently working on. Check out my interview with Devyn below:
Loryn: What strategies do you believe people and companies should take moving forward?
Devyn: The biggest thing that I believe will benefit companies moving forward is building culture. Culture is not a cool building, a great product, or cool work perks. Culture is the people that work at your company and the energy/character they have. To build culture we can evaluate better how people fit in terms of energy and character in the interview process to ensure we build better teams and therefore a better company culture.
Loryn: What advice would you give those interested in public speaking?
Devyn: Honestly, for those interested in public speaking, just start. Whether that is a community you are already involved in or other events, be willing to do it for free. If you afraid of the stage like I was, start. The reality is action cures fear so keep putting yourself in those scenarios that make you feel uncomfortable. As you begin to grow make sure you have a few topics you feel especially strong about and you can bring value. This will bring a punch to your speaking engagements. Last thing, network, network, and network some more. This will help open more doors.
Loryn: What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
Devyn: The biggest accomplishment to date is getting engaged to my fiancee. Next would be journey through college. Starting out as unmotivated first generation college student with no direction, finishing my degree and being where I am today feels drastically different. A large portion of that was my introversion. I was that guy who would rather be a fly on the wall than actively participate in a conversation. Through building myself I was able to shift some of those introverted tendencies and I figure out where I wanted to go in life. What followed was purpose and now an understanding of the fact I am much more than an engineer. Now that I am wrapping up undergrad, I see this as one of my biggest accomplishments to date.
Loryn: What advice would you give those who don't feel they are more than enough?
Devyn: My biggest advice for others for people who don't feel more than enough, is to remove your titles. Ask yourself, "If I had one day where money wasn't an issue and time wasn't an issue, how would you spend that day?" I can guarantee that answer will include more than just your job title. So why do we respond some asking what we do with just a title? We are all so much more dynamic than a job title or family role. Don't limit yourself and express who you truly are. Be more than.
Loryn: What's something people don't know about you?
Devyn: Something that most people don't know about me is that I love to snowboard. Growing up my second home was the ski hill in my hometown. It wasn't uncommon for me to spend 6-7 days a week there growing up. I started as a skier and shifted to snowboarding at 12 years old and never looked back. This sport has a special place in my heart because I met my fiancee there and that's where our friendship turned relationship began. I'm looking forward to snowboarding out west in the Rocky Mountains in the future. So if there are any other snowboarders out there, I would love to connect!
